The vibrant trade that marked the start of the Keeneland September Yearling Sale in Book 1 continued into Book 2 during the sale’s third session Sept. 15, and bloodstock agent Donato Lanni—who signed for nine individuals during the first two days of the catalog—showed no signs of slowing down Wednesday. Lanni picked up six yearlings for his clients, who have shelled out cumulative receipts totaling $9.79 million for 16 horses through the sale’s third session. Among the most expensive tickets of the day for Lanni were the back-to-back purchases of Hips 465 and 466. The agent went to $825,000 on behalf of Susan Chu’s Baoma Corp. for Hip 465. “She’s been very lucky with fillies,” Lanni said of Chu. “She’s a fun owner. She’s lucky. She and (husband) Charlie are really game. They let us buy nice fillies and this one looks like the type. She’s very supportive; great people to work for. The filly was real quiet, well made; everything we wanted.”

Before the ink had dried on the previous ticket, Lanni secured Hip 466 for the partnership of SF Bloodstock, Starlight Racing, and Madaket Stables—known as “the Avengers”—with a final bid of $850,000.
